JB Nelson Families,
We celebrated our 100th day of school this week and the kindergarten students really enjoyed celebrating this milestone in our year. Students are continuing to follow the JB Way and make good choices. We have had classes filling their buckets every day and our 5th schoolwide bucket is really close to being full so Mr. Albrecht and I are planning another school wide celebration!
It is time to complete the annual Illinois 5Essentials Survey that collects feedback from our students, teachers, and parents. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will give you the opportunity to share your thoughts on important elements of school effectiveness. The responses will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide our improvement efforts. All responses are confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
The Parent Survey is currently open and will remain so through March 11, 2022. To take the survey, please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey. In order for JB Nelson to receive a report we need at least 20% of our parents to respond to the survey. We currently have 14% of our parents that have responded to the survey. Please consider giving five minutes of your time to complete this survey in order to give us feedback and help us to better partner with parents and support our students.
Do you enjoy building systems and community outreach? The JBN PTO is looking to revamp our Watch D.O.G.S. program into a volunteer program that welcomes all members of our JBN community. If this is of interest to you, we are looking for 3 creative and collaborative parents to join our “Top Dog” Mr. Cheesman and I as we create the framework that will be presented to the PTO before the end of the school year. We would love to have both moms and dads as well as parents that have been at JBN for a long time and parents that are newer so that we have multiple perspectives as we plan for our future program. Please email me directly if you are interested or have follow up questions: nicole.prentiss@bps101.net.
Enjoy your weekend and we look forward to seeing our students on Monday!
~Mrs. Prentiss

JBN Family Science Night
For those of you who were around a few years ago, you know that we usually hold an in person ‘Family Science Night’ each Spring. The intent of this event is to give all JBN students an opportunity to experience some hands-on science, participate in an interactive science presentation and to create some science of their own if they are interested. This is not a traditional Science Fair, as Ss have several options to participate such as doing an experiment, presenting research of their choosing, or sharing a collection they might have. This event also includes a high interest, interactive presentation about science concepts on the stage.
This year, the PTO is planning to bring this back as an in person event on Tuesday, March 15th. We are planning to socially distance all of the students that have a display and limit the number of audience members in the presentation as well as having them socially distanced in the gym. If something changes and we have to pivot to a virtual event we are looking for ways to still have the students present their boards and have a live feed event that all families can view on the event night.
Please read this packet for more information about the event and please turn in this form if your child is interested in participating and presenting so we can prepare the spaces and have tables for all students that will present. Mrs. Phillips will be presenting this information to all students in the LRC in the next two weeks as well.
Next PTO Meeting
Please join us virtually for our next PTO meeting on February 8th at 6pm. All parents will receive a link to join in advance of the meeting. We always love seeing new faces and hearing new ideas!
Battle of the Books-4th & 5th Graders
Students in 4th and 5th grade were excited to hear about the 15th annual Battle of the Books competition during LRC this week. All students in 4th and 5th grade are invited to participate. To learn more about the program, click on Battle of the Books 2022. If you have any questions please contact julie.phillips@bps101.net.
PTO Budget & Fundraising Committee Volunteers Needed
The PTO is looking for volunteers to help put together a budget and a fundraising committee. For the budget committee, we need 2 volunteers to work with the budget lead along with the treasurer to help approve our budget for the 2022/23 school year. For the fundraising committee, we need 4 volunteers to help look into fundraising platforms for our upcoming fun run and other fun easy fundraising opportunities for our school and PTO. If you are interested in volunteering for one of these committees please email the PTO at Jbnpto@gmail.com.
S.A.B. Friday School Store
Our student leaders on the Student Advisory Board opened up the school store again this fall after it was closed for 2 years. We have been working out some of the kinks these past few weeks. Since there are a lot of new families we thought we could provide some information for parents.
Who: Student Council members work in the store for all JBN students to shop
When: Every Friday 8:45 am-9am
*We close the line off to 10 students at 8:55 and send the rest of the students back to class so they are not late. Not everyone will get to buy each week.
*Students who ride the bus will have an opportunity to line up in a special line so we can make sure they get an equal chance to buy.
Where: LRC
Why: SAB is learning economics in a real world environment. Student leaders order items they think will sell, set prices and solve issues that arise while running the store. They also decide how to use the money they earn to help fund projects that help our schools, local communities as well as our global community.
Cost: Items range from $.50-$4.00 and will be updated on this price list. Limit 2 items per person.
*Thank you for remembering that this is a student run program so patience is appreciated!
