JB Nelson Families,

Snowy weather is definitely here! Thank you to all families for getting your children set up with a bag for their winter gear and for labeling every item that they bring. We really appreciate it and it helps us to get them their items when they are left behind. The students worked together this week with each grade level contributing to a JBN snow fort. It’s the largest one I’ve ever seen students make and I am encouraging them to keep up the teamwork. Hopefully it will stay intact over weekends too!

It is the time of year that we prepare “just in case” for emergency closure days. If we need to close schools due to weather, this is the district emergency closure information that parents can access on the BPS website. Your child’s teacher will reach out and share how your child will connect with them and complete assigned work when school is closed. Please let them know if you have any questions.

This is Batavia Access Toy Drive’s 77th year supporting local families. Currently they are serving 600 Batavian children with holiday needs. They are looking for new winter hats, gloves, mittens, toys, games and puzzles for children ages 10-17. There is a large wrapped box in the office if your family would like to donate any items.

I often get asked what the school might need so this year we created an Amazon Wish list! Link to Recess Wish list

This registry has items that support our Chill Zone, Recess equipment and our Dojo Store which is open at recess the last full week of each month. Please label your package with JB Nelson ℅ Recess Donation so that we know when the box arrives where it needs to go!

As always, please make sure your child charges their Chromebook and has their comfy clothes so they are ready for learning on our Mindful Monday.

S.E.L. (Social Emotional Learning)

School-Home connections to help students grow their SEL skills!

BPS Strategic Plan Priority 2, Strategy 3-Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Programs

BPS Strategic Plan Priority 2, Strategy 4-Family & Community Partnerships

All students at JBN learn about social emotional skills in their daily classroom meetings.

All teachers follow the District’s Portrait of a Graduate sequence grades K-5.

For the months of  November and December our focus will be on Self Awareness.

Students have been learning about how their actions impact others through learning about expected and unexpected behaviors.

At school, we use the terms expected and unexpected behaviors to help students understand social expectations in a positive, concrete way.

Expected behaviors are actions that help everyone feel safe, comfortable, and ready to learn.

Unexpected behaviors are actions that make the situation feel confusing, unsafe, or uncomfortable for others.

Backpack Mail

BPS101 often receives requests from community organizations to distribute informational fliers to students in their backpacks. In an effort to be environmentally conscientious, we use an electronic format to deliver this information, which we call “Backpack Mail.”
