JB Nelson Families,
We enjoyed welcoming our students back to school this week. As we transitioned back into our schedules and routines we did some reteaching of expectations in the classrooms, hallways and at recess. We assessed all students, Kindergarten through Fifth grade on their reading fluency and next week we will complete our mid year MAP assessments for all students as well. We use this data to monitor student learning and growth and offer additional support when needed.
We are starting something new at JB Nelson!
Every Wednesday, we will practice “Wellness Wednesdays” which will have a focus on self care and Social Emotional (SEL) strategies to support students. All staff and students are invited to wear comfortable clothes on Wednesdays and we will begin with a mindful moment for the building as part of our morning announcements.
After announcements, teachers will lead their class through a lesson and/or activity aligned to the SEL theme in their morning meeting. The focus for each month will align to the District “Portrait of a Graduate” lessons. This month our focus will be on our personal emotions. We will learn to identify emotions and learn strategies to help us regulate our emotions. BPS Strategic Plan Priority 2, Strategy 3-Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Programs
Each week in this newsletter, I will include information from Wellness Wednesday below so that you can talk with your child about what they are learning and perhaps even use the strategies at home!
Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about this new building wide focus.
Many classrooms in BPS101 use the 7Bs—”Bandage, Breathing Bad, Bump, Bruise, Burning Up, Barf, or Bleeding”—as a guide for determining when students should visit the health office. This common language helps ensure students visit the health office only when necessary, minimizing disruptions to learning while keeping them safe and cared for.
By working together, we can help your child make the most of every school day. Here’s to a healthy, happy, and successful 2025!
I hope that you all enjoyed your winter break! Stay warm this weekend and we will see you on Monday. Looking ahead, Monday the 20th we will not be in school as we will observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
